Mom-Me? | The Revolving Door

By: Kathleen Cvitkovic

Doesn’t it seem when you first bring your baby home that everything changes? For example, adjusting to waking up at night, figuring out your baby’s feeding schedule, changing diapers and then having to find time to squeeze in a shower.

I remember when my friend had her first baby. She was getting no sleep at all, so eventually she made a sign for the front window that told visitors, “Mommy and Baby are sleeping. Please come back later”. The one time my husband and I came over, the sign was up and I remember feeling somewhat sad that we drove over and had to turn immediately around. I really wanted to see the baby.

So when we had our first baby a few years later, I faced the same situation. All the changes you go through to get yourself adjusted to your new role as parents. The one thing that I didn’t expect would change was my front door! It immediately turned into a revolving door the minute we brought the baby home. Don’t get me wrong, I totally appreciated all the help from the family (especially since I had C-section) but it was non-stop.

It is funny how a new addition to the family draws so many people to come over. It was more excitement than I had seen in years. Eventually the visitors became more spaced apart which made it easier so that I could get some sleep. Not enough though!

Even though sometimes I really wanted to “jam” the revolving door so that no one could get in, I always remembered how I felt when I saw the sign in my friend’s window. I wanted visitors to feel welcome to come over anytime to see our precious little girl.

At the end of the day, regardless of how tired my husband and I were, it was a wonderful time that made us feel extremely blessed to have a circle of family and friends around us. Those closest to us were there because they wanted to share in the joy of welcoming our new little girl home - the best celebration ever!
